I studied Human Nutrition & Dietetics at Surrey University and graduated in 1982. Since then, I have worked as a registered dietitian, predominantly in the NHS. Throughout my career, my roles have been varied but after specialising in paediatric dietetics in the early stages , this has been a component of my work throughout. In my present post with South Staffordshire PCT, I am involved with the dietary management of a wide range of paediatric and adult conditions but have a particular interest in ketogenic therapy, gastroenterology and the nutritional problems of children and adults with complex special needs.
My interest in ketogenic therapy began in 2008 when one young adult with was referred by his consultant neurologist for the management of intractable epilepsy. The information and professional support I accessed via the Matthews Friends international network and the UK Ketogenic Professional Advisory Group, enabled me to offer treatment to the patient – though it was an experimental journey for all concerned! I became increasingly aware of the immense potential of ketogenic therapy and the lack of availability for adults in the UK. Since then , I have been developing adult treatment protocols and raising the awareness of UK dietitians and adult neurologists to the potential benefits that ketogenic therapy can offer to those with intractable epilepsy.
I have also provided a mentoring service to clinicians wishing to trial ketogenic therapy with their adult patients and supported families and patients with information and guidance on accessing treatment.
Ketogenic therapy can offer significant benefits to the health and quality of life of those who respond, yet there is limited access to paediatric treatment and almost no access to supervised trials for adults at present.
Therefore, the Matthews Friends Centre for Ketogenic Dietary Therapies is set to make a real difference.
I am honoured to be part of the clinical dietetic team and will be overseeing the adult research project, delivering adult and paediatric treatments and education programmes for patients and professionals.
